Shrub to about 1.5 m tall. Leaves to about 5 cm long, 5 cm wide, divided 2-3 times into linear, pointed segments to about 1mm wide with a tangled appearance. Flower clusters spidery, erect, terminal, sometimes with a few branches. Flowers bright red, waxy, becoming black, hairless outside, hairy inside; spring to summer. Fruit slightly hairy.
