Perennial herb to 3 m tall. Stems prostrate or climbing, winged. Leaves with a terminal 3-branched tendril; stipules to 6 cm long, with longitudinal nerves. Leaflets paired, to 15 cm long, 5 cm wide, linear to elliptic, reticulately veined. Flowers of 5-15 flowers, purplish, pink or white; summer. Fruit pod to about 10 cm long, hairless, containing 10-15 rough seeds.
Available as a range of different coloured cultivars including 'Albus', 'Pink Pearl' and 'White Pearl'.
