A deciduous tree to 15 m tall with a single trunk and few main branches. Winter buds resinous. Leaflets 11-21, narrow-oblong, 3-8 cm long, sharply toothed, woollyhairy below when young. Flowers about 2 cm wide, in a pyramidal cluster about 10 cm wide. Fruit 2-3 cm wide, round to sub-globose, yellow at first, ripening to deep yellow with orange and red shading.
Mediterranean. Occasionally naturalised on the C Coast of NSW.
The fruit, known as sorbs, were once eaten when extremely ripe, or converted into a beer, cider or liqueur.
