Deciduous shrub to about 2 m tall. Leaves opposite, 5-10 cm long, more or less ovate, with a long-pointed tip, the margins double-toothed; stipules thread-like. Flowers about 2-4 cm wide, terminal on lateral shoots; late spring and early summer. Sepals 4, toothed, and with 4 supplementary small lobes. Petals 4, round, white. Stamens numerous. Ovary superior. Carpels 4, free. Fruit of 4 shiny, black, dry drupes with an enlarged persistent calyx. Syn. R. kerrioides Siebold & Zucc.
