Evergreen trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, leathery, margins mostly toothed, often wavy; stipules small, soon shed. Flower clusters short, with few flowers. Flowers mostly functionally unisexual. Sepals 5. Petals 5, narrowly obovate, greenish white. Stamens 10. Carpels 5, more or less free. Fruit of 5 manyseeded follicles united at the base.
4 species from temperate and subtropical S America.
