More or less erect shrub to 5 m tall. Leaves in whorls on the short lateral shoots, elliptic to lanceolate, 3-8 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, margin mostly entire, mostly waxy-green below, sometimes with some grey hair, tip pointed. Flowers in downy clusters; late spring to early summer. Fruit 6-8 mm wide, becoming deep red in summer. Syn. P. gibbsii A.B. Jacks.
