Kerria japonica (L.) D C.

Deciduous shrub to 3 m or so tall with long, arching branches. Leaves simple, alternate, about 3-11 cm long, lanceolate, double-toothed and with a long-pointed tip; stipules slender, soon shed. Flowers solitary, lateral, 2-5 cm wide. Sepals 5. Petals 5 or flowers double, rich yellow; spring to summer. Stamens numerous. Ovary superior. Carpels 5-8, free. Fruit a cluster of achenes with the calyx persistent.

This is the sole species of the genus and is generally grown as the double-flowered form 'Pleniflora'..
