Latin tiara — crown, referring to the shape of the fruit.

Rhizomatous perennial herb. Leaves mostly in a basal rosette, simple or of 3 leaflets, sometimes lobed and with long leaf stalks; stipules small. Flowers bisexual, radially symmetrical, in branched or simple clusters. Sepals 5, coloured. Petals 5. Stamens 10, protruding from the flower and sometimes of unequal length. Fruit a capsule containing several seeds.

7 species, 6 from N America and 1 from E Asia.
