Enkianthus campanulatus (Miq.) G.

This is the most commonly cultivated species; it is a deciduous shrub to 5 m or more tall. Leaves elliptic or obovate, margins saw-toothed. Flowers in clust­ers, each bell-shaped, yellowish-orange with red veins; spring to summer.

E. cernuus (Siebold & Zucc.) Makino also has a hairless ovary but the corolla lobes are longer and more pointed; it is generally sold as f. rubens (Maxim.) Ohwi which has deep red flowers.
