Hairless perennial herbs; roots rhizomatous, bulging. Leaves basal, simple or deeply lobed. Flowers with sepals and petals 4; petals white. Fruit globose to ellipsoid with the valves weakly veined; style short; seeds in 2 rows in each chamber. [Cochlearia L.]

Large plants with leaves often more than 30 cm long, similar to those of Dock (Rumex) but without the ocreae.
