Climber, evergreen in frost-free areas. Leaves leathery, pale green with 3 toothed lobes. Flower scarlet, about 10 cm wide and with a purple fringe of filaments, the tube about 3-4 cm long and swollen at the base; spring to summer. Fruit egg-shaped to more or less spherical, to 5 cm long.
