Annual or short-lived perennial herbs with long leafy stems. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, round-toothed. Stipules large, deeply dissected at the base. Flowers about 2 cm wide, variously coloured white, yellow, red, purplish-red, violet and multicoloured.

One of the parents of the larger-flowered common garden pansy. Several colour cultivars are available.
