Tufted herb to 15 cm or more tall. Leaves ovate with round-toothed margins and large stipules that are strongly toothed in the bottom half. Flowers violet, slightly fragrant, mostly about 2-4 cm wide. Spur narrow, about as long as the sepals; summer.

Several colour cultivars are used for bedding out.
