Mostly shrubby, to 4 m or more tall. Young shoots grey hairy. Leaves narrowly elliptic to obovate, 5-10 cm long, leathery, toothed (except at the base), hairy on veins below, tip pointed. Flowers solitary, about 2 cm long, lantern-like, fleshy, grooved, toothed at the mouth, carmine (a white cultivar is known); stalks 5-8 cm or more long, carmine; early summer.
