Veitch's Magnolia

Garden origin

(M. campbellii × M. denudata) Deciduous small tree. Shoots reddish at first. Leaves oblong to obovate mostly 15-30 cm long, reddish beneath at first. Leaf stalk 1-2.5 cm long. Flowers appearing before the leaves, robust, suffused pale pink on the outside, sepal-like segments 3, petal-like segments 6; early spring.

Raised in England by Mr Peter Veitch in 1907, first successful British magnolia breeder; there appear to be several clones in Australia.

Resembling M. campbellii but with mostly 7-10 segments (not 12-16 as in M. campbellii); flowers bulbous and with an inverted pear shape.
