Magnolia ×thompsoniana (Loudon) de Vos

Thompson's Magnolia

(m. tripetala × m. virginiana) Deciduous or occasionally semi-evergreen shrub. Branchlets with incomplete pith divisions. Leaves mostly 13-16 cm long, 5-7 cm wide, elliptic to oblanceolate, waxy and shortly downy below. Leaf stalks about 2-2.5 cm long. Flowers vase-shaped with 9 greenish perianth segments; spring.

Garden origin

Raised from a chance hybrid at the Thompson nursery near London, England, 1808.

M. tripetala L., Umbrella Tree from E N. America, is rarely cultivated.
