Annual with long hairs at the stem joints and below the flowers. Leaves cylindrical, to 2.5 cm long. Flowers with notched, spreading petals. Fruit capsule opening by a lid.

Brazil, Uruguay

Grown as an annual with a wide range of brightly coloured cultivars including white, cream, yellow, orange, pink and red as well as large-flowered, double and semi-double variants.

This species in Australia requires taxonomic review.

Cultivars include: 'Cocktail', 'Night Owl', 'Sunnybank' and 'Wildfire'.
