Erect, prostrate or trailing herbs or small shrubs. Leaves alternate or more or less opposite. Flowers mostly unisexual, stalkless in small terminal or axillary clusters. Perianth 5-parted; stamens mostly 5. Styles 2. Fruit small slightly compressed berries.
