Stetsonia Britton & Rose

Commemorating Francis L. Stetson from New York (early 20th century).

Body tree-like, to 10 m tall with many erect cylindrical branches. Ribs 8-9. Spines 7-9. Flowers nocturnal, funnel-shaped with an internal ring of hairs formed from modified stamens, white. Pericarpel and especially flower tube elongated with numerous overlapping pointed scales. Fruit oblong to spherical, to 6 cm long, red or green with many small scales.

The sole species is the white-flowered S. coryne (Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose which makes a fine pot specimen mostly 10 cm to 30 cm tall, rarely encountered growing towards its potential natural height.
