Stems to several metres long with mostly 25-30 ribs. Areoles close-set with mostly 30-40 spines the longest to 5 cm long, white. Flowers dark red.

C. tupizensis (Vaupel) Backeb. is sometimes available and differs most obviously in having 18-24 ribs and up to 20 radial spines per areole.
