Trees or shrubs. Leaves with pronounced gland dots. Flowers axillary, solitary or in clusters. Sepals united, cup-like, persistent with an entire or lobed edge. Petals 5-6. Stamens to 15 in 3 rows. Carpels 1-6, free. Fruit berry-like with 2-6 seeds.
Leaves of cultivated species red blotched; stamen filaments flattened.
3 species endemic to New Zealand.
