Helleborus lividus Aiton

Evergreen to about 40 cm tall. Basal leaves absent; stem leaves with 3 leaflets (the 2 lateral ones asymmetric), thick, veins pale, lower surface purplish pink, marginal teeth, when present, well spaced. Flowers few, in terminal clusters, cup-like or flat, about 3-5 cm wide, hanging at first, becoming more erect, pale green tinged with purple; winter-spring. Carpels mostly 5, fused at the base.

Hybridises with H. argutifolius to give H. ×”sternii.

Leaves and flowers on same stem; leaflets 3, entire or with widely spaced marginal teeth; lower leaf surface, leaf stalk and flowers suffused with purple.
