Rhizome covered with scales. Stalks hairless, yellowish, to about 50 cm long. Fronds divided once, twice at the base. Blade to about 60 cm long, oblong or ovate in outline, side branches in 4-8 pairs, ultimate segments narrowly elliptic, sharply saw-toothed. Sori extending nearly to the margin.
Needs shelter and warmth.
Japan and Taiwan, China, Korea to Northern India.

Coniogramme japonica (Thunb.) Diels, Bamboo Fern, from Japan, Korea and China, hardly differs except in having netted veins and tips of the lateral segments that are not so abruptly contracted into a linear threadlike tip; it is also available as a variegated variant with yellow mottling along the midribs and will tolerate cool conditions.
