Rhizome long-creeping, underground, black. Fronds divided 3-4 times, more or less triangular in outline, extremely thick and leathery, dark green. Sori along the margins. Can grow in cool areas.

Though rarely cultivated, frequently encountered in the wild and spreading rapidly after fire or through cleared ground to become a pest plant.

WA, SA, E Australia, NZ, Pacific Is.

Extemely thick leathery fronds with spreading rhizomes; sori along the margins with an inner indusial flap. Occasionally confused in the wild with Calochlaena dubia, False Bracken, which is a much more delicate membranous fern without sori continuous along the margins.
