Narrow shrubs, climbing in most later stages. Leaves alternate, mainly narrowelliptic. Flowers up to 4, nodding; petals free, elliptic, slightly recurving at the apices, hence flowers not bell-shaped; deep azure blue; paler blues, white and pinks are now also available horticulturally. Stamens with anthers as long or usually much longer than the filaments, the tops joined in a ring around the pistil; fruits berry-like (see Billardiera), purple-green, fairly narrow, spindle-shaped.
