Small shrub to 50 cm tall, hairy. Stems much-branched. Leaves ovate to narrowovate, to 15 cm long, to 7 cm wide, margins toothed or divided, becoming glabrous above, densely white-hairy below. Capitula radiate, many in compound corymbs, to 1 cm across, on short stalks; summer. Ray florets yellow. Disk florets yellow. [S. maritimus Koidz., S. bicolor (Willd.) Tod.]
Western and central Mediterranean
S. pectinatus DC. from SE Australia is a rosetted alpine herb with deeply lobed leaves, radiate capitula to 3 cm across on long bracteate stalks and yellow ray florets.
