Dense, compact bamboo with stem 1–2 m tall and 3–5 mm thick, characteristically zig-zag from node to node. Basal sheaths with purple ribbing. Leaves mostly 5–10 cm long, more or less elliptic and typically withered at the tip; stalk relatively long. Flowering sporadic.
