Leaf stalk without a joint at junction with blade; fertile stamens 1, sterile stamens forming showy petal-like sterile stamens; fertile stamen slightly petal-like and with 1 anther chamber; ovary warty and containing numerous ovules cf. Marantaceae.

1 genus of about 8-10 species from tropical, subtropical and warm temperate Americas.
