Spear Lily

Large rosette to 2.5 m high and 3 m wide. Leaves numerous, spreading and recurved, sword-shaped, 2-4 m long, 15-20 cm wide; tip pointed-tubular, 8-12 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, brown. Scape 2-5 m long, arching over. Flowers 5-5.5 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, scarlet, red to red-brown. Fruits ellipsoid to ovoid, 7-10 cm long, 5-6 cm wide with short apical beak 6-7 mm long. Syn. D. excelsa Corra var. palmeri (Benth.) F.M. Bailey; D. guilfoylei F.M. Bailey, D. excelsa var. guilfoylei (F.M. Bailey) F.M. Bailey.

Occasionally cultivated in gardens and parks in temperate and subtropical areas.
