Perennial herb from a short annual corm. Leaves several, basal, linear, hairless. Inflorescence to about 25 cm. Flower 1, star-shaped, widely-spreading; spring to summer.Tepals to 30 mm long, yellow to white with an iridescent purple spot at the base. Fruit a capsule. Seeds spherical, black. Syn. Hypoxis capensis (L.) Druce, H. stellata L.
