Perennial herb with tuberous roots. Leaves several, linear, grey-green, hairy. Inflorescence to about 15 cm long. Flowers 1-2, star-shaped, spreading; late spring. Tepal lobes to 20 mm long, bright red-pink to white or pinkish. Fruit a capsule. Seeds black.

f. platypetala (Bak.) Milne-Redhead. Leaves broader and more grey; flowers white or pale pinkish.

Listed cultivars include: 'Albrighton','Dawn', 'Margaret Rose', 'Picta' and 'Stella'.
