Molineria Colla

Named for the Italian botanist I.B. Molinieri (1741–1818).

Perennial, stout palm-like rhizomatous herbs with condensed stems. Leaves pseudostalked, broadly lance-shaped, plicate and almost palm-like, sheathing. Flowers radially symmetrical, stalked, individual flower stalks not articulated. Inflorescence a many-bracteate head.Tepals 3+3, several-nerved, basally fused. Stamens 6, attached to tepals. Ovary inferior, ovoid-elongate. Fruit a berry. Seeds dull black. Syn. Moliniera.

Grown as foliage plants in moist shade, or as hardy indoor plants.

About 7 species from SE Asia.
