Hooker's Fairy Bell

Perennial herb to about 1m tall. Stems few-branched. Leaves cauline, alternate, ovate, stem-clasping, rough hairy beneath. Inflorescence 1-3 flowered. Flowers bell-shaped, nodding, tips recurved; summer.Tepals to 2 cm long, greenish-white. Style entire, hairless or with hairs at the base only. Fruit a 4-6-seeded red berry. Syn. Disporum hookeri (Torr.) Nichols.

P. smithii Utech, Shinwari & Kawano, Smith's Fairy Bell, from coastal western N America is a perennial herb to about 1 m; stems few-branched. Leaves cauline, alternate, ovate, stem-clasping, rough hairy beneath. Inflorescence 2-6 flowered. Flowers bell-shaped, nodding, tips recurved; summer. Tepals to 3 cm long, greenish-white. Style 3-lobed, short hairs along its length. Fruit a 5-9-seeded orange or red berry. Syn. Disporum smithii (Hook.) Piper.
