California Fawn Lily

Perennial herb to about 35 cm. Leaves narrow-oblong to ovate-oblong, strongly mottled. Inflorescence 1-3 flowered. Flowers nodding, slightly recurved; spring. Tepals to 35 mm long, white to cream, basally green-yellow inside with a yellow, orange or brown band. Anthers white. Stigma lobed.

E. dens-canis L., Dog's-tooth Violet, from temperate Europe to Asia is a perennial herb to about 30 cm. Leaves oblong, strongly mottled. Inflorescence 1 flowered. Flower nodding, reflexed; spring. Tepals to 25 mm long, deep pink to purple, sometimes white, basally pale yellow or brown inside with a purple-brown band. Anthers blue to purple. Stigma deeply lobed.

E. hendersonii S.Wats., Henderson's Fawn Lily, from Oregon and California is a perennial herb to about 30 cm. Leaves oblong, mottled, margins crisped. Inflorescence 1-10 flowered. Flowers nodding, recurved; spring to summer.Tepals to 40 mm long, pink-purple, basally purple inside with a faint yellow band. Anthers brown to blue. Stigma entire.

E. oregonum Appleg., Oregon Fawn Lily, from Oregon and California, is a perennial herb to about 30 cm. Leaves narrow ovate-oblong, mottled. Inflorescence 1-6 flowered. Flowers nodding, recurved; spring. Tepals to 50 mm long, apically twisted, white to pale pink, basally yellow inside with a faint yellow band. Stamen filaments thick basally; anthers yellow. Stigma lobed. 'White Beauty' is a white flowered variant or hybrid involving E. oregonum with a yellow and brown basal band inside on the tepals.

E. revolutum Sm., Coast Fawn Lily, from Oregon and California, is a perennial herb to about 40 cm. Leaves narrow-ovate, mottled, margins crisped. Inflorescence 1-several-flowered. Flowers nodding, recurved; spring to summer.Tepals to 45 mm long, rose-pink, basally pink inside with 1-2 yellow bands. Anthers yellow. Stigma lobed.

E. tuolumnense Appleg. from Oregon and California is a perennial herb to about 30 cm. Leaves broad-ovate, not mottled. Inflorescence 1-several-flowered. Flowers nodding, recurved; spring. Tepals to 30 mm long, gold, basally greenish inside without bands. Anthers yellow. Stigma entire. 'Pagoda' is a robust, faintly mottleleaved, several flowered, lemon yellow hybrid of E. tuolumnense.
