Perennial herb to about 80 cm; bulbils absent. Leaves basal and cauline; basal leaf shorter than stem, present at flowering. Inflorescence stout, umbel-like, often branched. Flowers spherical or bell-shaped, drooping; spring to summer.Tepals to 30 mm long, inner 3-fringed, white to pink; hairy above an impressed, membranefringed, elongated gland. Anthers blunt to acute, shorter than filaments.

C. amabilis Purdy, Diogenes' Lantern (Golden Globe Tulip, Golden Fairy Lantern), from California is a perennial herb to about 30 cm; bulbils absent. Leaves basal and cauline; basal leaf longer than stem, present at flowering. Inflorescence umbel-like, often branched. Flowers spherical or bell-shaped, drooping; spring.Tepals to 20 mm long, inner 3 dense-fringed, deep yellow; smooth or few-haired above an impressed, hair-fringed, elongated gland. Anthers blunt, shorter than filaments.
