Floating Pondweed

Stems to 3 m or so long, flattened. SUBMERGED LEAVES to about 20 cm long, 8 cm wide, more or less ovate, stalkless. EMERGENT LEAVES thickish, ovate to rounded, to 10 cm long, 6 cm wide with mostly 13-17 prominent longitudinal veins. SUBMERGED LEAVES translucent. FLOWER SPIKES to 5 cm long; spring to early autumn. FRUIT of nutlets 2-4 mm long.

Grows best in still or slow flowing fresh water, often in ponds and dams. Several variants are known with different leaf size and number of veins.
