Ruta graveolens L.

Common Rue

Hairless blue-green shrub to 1m tall. Flowers in terminal yellow clusters; late spring to summer. Leaves with 3 leaflets further divided into oblong or spoon-shaped segments. Fruit segments blunt-tipped.

S Europe

Caution is needed with this plant as it is strongly aromatic, with volatile oils that can produce dermatitis in some people.

 

R. chalepensis L. may be encountered, but probably under the name R. graveolens.

Ruta graveolens 'Jackman's Blue'

Compact smaller plant with foliage a vivid blue.

Originally grown by a Mr Greener in the UK garden of 'Ottershaw', Surrey, c. 1930s, but introduced commercially c. 1945 by Rowland Jackman.
