Erect shrub to over 1 m tall. Leaves elliptic to ovate, to about 20 cm long, prominently veined, pointed. Flower clusters in axillary or terminal spikes, the bracts prominently nerved. Flowers to about 3 cm long, deep blue and with a narrow tube and spreading lobes. [E. nervosum (Vahl) R. Br.]

Grown mostly as an indoor plant but can become weedy if grown outside in tropical areas.
