An erect or spreading small shrub to about 1m tall with new branches yellow-hairy. Leaves elliptic, mostly 3-8 cm long. Flower clusters axillary, more or less stalkless, in dense spikes. Flowers about 5 cm long, the 2 outer sepals veined and spiny, inner ones linear, entire. Petals blue-violet, pink or white; summer.
