Greek phakelos — cluster, referring to the dense flower clusters in this genus.

Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, simple and lobed, or pinnate. Flower clusters 1-sided and generally coiled. Corolla white, blue or purple. Stamens sometimes protruding. Fruit capsule roundish.

Grown as 1 species for the delicate ferny foliage and bee-attracting flower clusters.
