Perennial submerged or marginal spreading rhizomatous herb rooting at the nodes. Leaves of 3 entire, elliptic to ovate leaflets, each 3-6 cm long; stalks winged and sheathing the base. Flower clusters to 20 cm or so long, of up to 20 flowers. Flowers with 5 fringed and bearded petals, white to pink. Fruit a capsule.
