Day-flowering perennial with stems to about 60 cm tall, often sprawling, slender and with bristly hairs. Basal leaves oblanceolate. Stem leaves lanceolate. Flowers with petals 1-1.8 cm long, yellow. Fruit capsule 6-12 mm long, narrowed towards the base but not so strongly as in o. fruticosa. Syn. O. fruticosa var. youngii hort., a name of no botanical standing.
var. fraseri (Pursh) Munz from the S Appalachian Mtns is hairless and has relatively broad leaves with a waxy bloom below and flowers with petals at least 2.5 cm long. Syn. O. glauca and O. fruticosa var. glauca are names of no botanical standing sometimes used for this variety.
