Deciduous shrub to 2 m tall. Branchlets hairy at first and branching in 3s. Leaves mostly 10-15 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, hairy below. Flowers appearing before the leaves, yellow to orange, calyx tube silky outside with 4 spreading lobes; spring. Syn. E. papyrifera Siebold & Zucc.
The cultivars 'Grandiflora' and 'Red Dragon' are sometimes listed.
