Erect shrubs to 2 m tall. Leaves to about 4.5 cm long, 2 cm wide, ovoid, rigid, margins hardened. Female flower head about 2.5 cm long, unpleasant-smelling, the flowers arranged in spirals.

Broadly ovate leaves. L. strobilinum is similar but has densely hairy floral bracts on the male and much larger female cones.
