Shrub to 2 m tall. Leaves to about 5 cm long, thick, with margins toothed or with 3-5 deep, pointed lobes; stalk 2-5 cm long. Flower clusters terminal, ovoid to spherical or, more frequently, barrel-shaped, to 2.5-3 cm wide, stalkless. Flowers to about 1 cm long, cream to yellow; spring to early summer. Fruiting cones barrelshaped, to about 2.5 cm wide.
