Shrub to 3 m tall. Leaves simple, obovate to broadly elliptic, mostly 5-14 cm long, thick with a sharp point. Flower clusters compressed, terminal, solitary, to 8 cm wide. Flowers about 3.5 cm long, pink to mauve-pink with a tuft of hairs at the end of each segment. Fruiting cones compressed, spherical, to 4.5 cm wide.
