Variable prostrate to scrambling or erect shrub to about 2 m tall. Leaves opposite (rarely some or all alternate), more or less ovate, mostly 3-6 cm long, 1-2 cm wide with a pointed tip; stalk length variable. Flowers 1-4 per axil, often abundant, yellow and red; spring and summer. Fruit pod to about 5 cm long, with a thin wing above the upper suture nerve.
