Shrub to about 4 m tall. Leaves to about 15 cm long. Leaflets in 5-7 pairs, elliptic to ovate, hairy. Flowers 3-8, each to 2 cm long, yellow, the standard lined with red; summer. Fruit inflated, reddish green, balloon-like, to about 7 cm long. C. × media Willd. (C. arborescens × C. orientalis) is occasionally grown; it has leaflets in 3-6 pairs and flowers that are orange to reddish brown
