A small deciduous tree to 5 m. Leaves to 9.5 cm long, initially reddish purple, becoming greener over summer, broadly ovate to oval, acuminate; margin finely toothed, teeth with pointed tips. Flowers in 1s and 2s, with reddish stalks 0.8-1.5 cm long, pink, semi-double, 3 cm wide, fragrant. Fruit not produced.

A hybrid, P. cerasifera 'Atropurpurea' × P. mume.

A common garden plant and street tree.
