Perennial herb with spreading rhizomes. Leaves cordate and hairy, to 10 cm or so long and wide with shallow lobes and palmate venation; stipules prominent. Leaf stalk to 20 cm long. Flowers irregular, in a terminal cluster. Sepals 5, the calyx tube cylindrical and separate from the ovary. Petals 4, thread-like, brownish purple. Stamens 3, shorter than the petals. Ovary superior, with 2 beak-like projections. Fruit a capsule.
